What Are The Greatest Love Stories Of All Time?
With Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, we look back at some of the greatest love stories of all time in hopes it may add a little passion into your relationship on February 14th.
Antony and Cleopatra
There’s no story more romantic than forbidden love, which is exactly why the relationship between Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra has captured our imaginations over the centuries.
Queen of Egypt Cleopatra reportedly fell in love with Roman General Marcus Antonius, tragically ending in a double suicide. Their story has been retold repeatedly, from Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra to the 1963 movie Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Of course, Taylor and Burton themselves know a thing or two about a love story, as they had one of the most famous in recent history. They first met on the set of Cleopatra and fell in love while both married to other people.
Despite this, they tied the knot two years later before divorcing in 1974. Unable to keep away from each other, they married yet again in 1975.
In a diary entry, Taylor wrote: “We exchanged rings, fathomless looks, and were married once again, back where we belonged. Always belonged.”
However, they divorced less than a year later, with Elizabeth saying she loved Richard with “every fibre of my soul but we can’t be together”.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip
Though the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip may not be famous for the same passion and drama as Taylor and Burton’s, the fact they were married for more than 70 years really makes their love one of the strongest.
The Queen famously described her husband as her “strength and stay” throughout her life, showing just how much the pair relied on and loved one another over the decades.
Whether you have a fiery relationship or a solid, reliable one, show your partner how much you care on Valentine’s Day with a special eternal rose.
